Choosing the Right Car Seat for Your Baby
Finding the right baby car seat for ages 0-4 is about more than just choosing an age range. Here are a few things worth having on your radar as you find the right fit for your family:
- Think about rearward-facing use
Rearward-facing travel is an important part of those early car trips, so check how long your chosen seat can be used this way. Look at the age, height and weight limits to see how the seat lines up with your little one’s stage.
- Check how it fits in your car
Before choosing a car seat for your baby, have a look at the space in your back seat. Think about where the front seats sit and, if you’re choosing a rotating model, whether there’s enough room for the seat to swivel towards the door.
- Find a compatible installation method
ISOFIX connects the car seat directly to your vehicle’s ISOFIX anchorage points, while seatbelt installation secures it using the vehicle’s lap and sash belt. Check which installation method the car seat uses to ensure it’s compatible with your vehicle. Features such as ClickTight or SMART Lock™ can also be helpful during installation.
- Look for features that adjust as they grow
Your little one won’t stay the same size for long, so adjustable features can be really handy. Look for adjustable headrests and harnesses, along with recline positions that give you more flexibility.
- Don’t forget the extras
Easy-care fabrics, newborn inserts, magnetic harness holders and cup holders can be convenient when you’re out and about with your baby.

Which Car Seat Is Right for Your Child?
Not sure whether you need a capsule, a 0-4 baby car seat or a booster? Here’s a quick way to tell them apart:
- 0-4 Year Baby Car Seat - Designed to be used from birth through approximately four years, with rearward- and forward-facing modes to suit different stages.
- Baby Capsule - Made for newborns through to around 6 months, depending on the capsule’s age, height and weight limits. Capsules can also be removed from the car for quick trips and carrying your sleeping baby into the house.
- Booster Seat - For children around 4-8 years, a booster seat helps position the vehicle’s seatbelt correctly as they get bigger, with age, height and weight limits varying between seats.
What Makes a Car Seat Legal in Australia?
For a baby car seat to be approved for use in Australia, it must meet AS/NZS 1754:2013, the Australian/New Zealand standard for child restraints. The standard sets requirements for how child restraints are designed, made and tested, including their construction, performance and safety features.
In Australia, the rules also set out which type of restraint children need at different ages:
- Under 6 Months - Rear-facing child restraint
- 6 Months to 4 Years - Rear-facing or forward-facing seat with an in-built harness
- 4 to 7 Years - Forward-facing seat with an in-built harness or an approved booster seat
Children aged 7 and over who are too small for a seatbelt should continue using an approved booster seat or anchored safety harness. The suggested minimum height for using a seatbelt is 145 cm.
